Can ping domain but cannot use unc path?

R

Rick Dowd

From a fresh install of Windows 2000, and just
successfully added the PC to the domain I will attempt to
access the unc path of the domain e.g. \\abc.com and will
receive a error although I will be able to ping the same
address just fine. I am receiving IP from DHCP. This has
been happening consistently with new PCs we are receiving
at work, although not all the PCs. I also notice that the
PC will not appear in My Network Places.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled IP protocal and it will
resolve the problem momentarily by sometimes upon reboot I
have the same problem.

Any suggestions.

I would start by installing the latest Windows 2000
service packs on those computers. Also, another thing I
might try is to export the WinSock and WinSock2 registry
entries from a computer that this doesn't happen on to a
computer that has the problem and see if that helps.
These registry folders should be found using regedit from
run window under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Simply go to file menu and select export when you have
one of the folders selected, export it to a floppy disk,
and then import onto the corrupted computer. To be safe,
possibly export these folders on the corrupted machine to
a different floppy disk so you can restore the exact
settings in case this doesn't work and you want to go
back.

Hope this helps...
