Can Ping...but can't use Computer Name

Paul Reed

Hello,

I occasionally do work at a client that has a workgroup of about 5 XP
machines...no domains.

When I attach to their network with my W2KPro machine, I can get to the
network with my wireless card and surf the net with no problems...however I
can't see neither their workgroup or their machines...nor can they see
me...however I can ping them with their DHCP assigned IP addresses just fine
and they can ping me as well...but we can't use computer names.

Any ideas?

Regards...Paul

This would be a name resolution issue. Does the site have either a DNS
server, or a WINS server? If neither DNS nor WINS are present, then Windows
will try to use NetBT to resolve the names. This requires that NetBIOS over
TCPIP (NetBT ) be enabled on your interface ( this can be found in the
Network Interface properties )
