Can original email authors receive copies of forwarded messages?

A colleague of mine shared the following experience. It sounds a little
impossible and a lot like an invasion of privacy. Can someone tell me if this
is an urban legend or if it is possible?

He said he received a forwarded message from a coworker and replied to it.
He also said that the original author of the email that had been forwarded
was somehow automatically copied on all the replies [to the forwarded
message].

Is that possible? I told him the person he replied to shared his comments
with the orginal author. He swears up and down that the situation described
above happened. Can I get a real answer here? Thanks!

I don't know of any mail system that would automatically include the original sender's address in the reply-to addresses on a forwarded message, but it's not totally inconceivable.
