Can not start Remote Access Connection Manager service

Paul

Hi all,

On XP Home, I was having various problems (components
of "search missing", etc.), so I re-ran setup from the
original CD and chose the repair option. This seemed to
fix all of my problems but my dial-up connections had
vanished! When I tried to recreate them I discovered that
my dial-up connections were "greyed out", even though the
modem driver was correctly installed and operation. After
much investigation I determined that the cause was because
the Remote Access Connection Manager service was not
running, and whenever I try to start it manually I
recieve "Error 5: Access Denied"!

I have tried from all Admin accounts on this machine,
uninstalled and reisntalled modem drivers etc. etc. etc..
The only KB article I can find which relates to this
problem in any way
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;330163) does not seem to help me.

Any ideas?

After performing a "repair" from my setup CD for XP Home I
encountered this error. I managed to work out using the
help tools that the cause was that the two Remote Access
services mentioned here were not running, however when I
try to start them I get a "Error 5: Access Denied"
message. I have tried to start them from all three admin
accounts installed on my PC to no avail :( Any help
appreciated immensly, as this is stopping me from
recreating my dial-up connections. Paul

Thanks! That KB article exactly covers it. I think I
downloaded SP1 to install it through Windows update, and
it's no longer available as a seperate download on the MS
site ... will installing SP1a do the trick?
