Can not Share USB drive

I have a small Home Network WorkGroup Windows XP Pro setup. There is a USB
Maxtor Disk drive NTFS attached to the desktop computer. When I try to Share
a directory on this USB drive with the laptop computer, the directory appears
in Windows Explorer. But, When I click on it on the laptop I get the
following error message.

\\MurphyOne\SavedEmails is not accessilbe. You might not have permission to
use this network resourse. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

When I connect a simple USB thumb drive to the desktop and share directories
on it everything works fine. I can also share any directory on the desktop's
C: drive without a problem. I also share two printers from the desktop with
the laptop with no problem. If I attach the same Maxtor Drive to the laptop I
can share directories with the desktop with no problem. Both computers have
the same Windows Firewall (disabling it does not solve the problem) and both
computer have the same Norton 2007 AntiVirus installed (disabling it does no
good). I don't feel that there is any basic network setup problem with all
the above information. Has anyone got any ideas on this bug and a solution?

Thanks,
Mike Murphy

The problem is probably that Norton Antivirus has changed an obscure
TCP/IP setting on the desktop computer. Please see this Microsoft
Knowledge Base article for a likely solution, specifying a value of 15
for IRPStackSize on that computer:

Thanks for the reply, but neither the laptop nor the desktop have any value
for IRPStackSize in the registry and the laptop works with the USB drive
connected. The Value is not there, let alone set. I had already seen this
article, but since the value has not been set on either computer I assume
that it has no effect in this matter. Also I am not receiving a 2011 ID
error. Just the error window that I stated.

Any other ideas?

I went back into the registry and setup a Key for IRPStackSize on the desktop
since it was not there. I then set a value of 14 decimal for it and
rebooted. It did not work, but when I set the value to 18 it did work and the
USB drive is now working correctly on the network. I kind of doubt that
Norton AntiVirus is the cause. Most likely it is some other program, however,
the problem seems to be solved at present. Thanks.

I suspect that Norton Antivirus is the cause -- it's the only program
that I've ever heard of causing this problem. In any event, I'm
glad that my suggestion helped you find the solution. Thanks for
letting the news group know.
