Can not log on to XP

H

Harvey VanMeter

When I start my XP Home Edition PC it gets to the log on screen and I get a
message saying I must reactivate Windows XP. When I select OK to reactivate
it goes back to the log on screen and gives me the same reactivate message.
No new hardware has been added lately. So I suspect something is corrupted.
Anyone know how to fix this mess?

TIA

Hi Harvey,

Boot to safe mode by hitting F8 as the system boots.

Start/run regsvr32 regwizc.dll
Then start/run regsvr32 licdll.dll

If this doesn't help try these steps:

Start/run regedit. Delete the following keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Providers

Exit the registry editor, restart normally.

Thanks for your help Rick.

I tried to boot into safe mode but got the same problem.
I tried to restore the last known good configuration but that appears to
have made matters worse. Now I get to the Welcome screen and it stops there.
Should I try booting from the CD and doing a repair?

Hi Harv,

That would be the next step. Follow these steps to do a repair install which
should preserve your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.
