can not convert or open 97 in access 2002

I am getting "the visual basic for application project in this database is
corrupt" error message when I try to convert or open an access 97 database in
Access 2002.

We are in the process of upgrading computers and OSs so we want to move away
from access 97.

This is a pretty big and badly writen database. Should we keep it on 97 and
install 97 on the new XP computers or is there a way to fix this problem?
Fixing it would be better I think.
