Can Not Connect To Websites

B

Bill Bradshaw

It was recommended in the internet explorer group that I bring this here.

Running WinXP Pro SP3 and IE8. I can not open the following sites with
either IE8 or Firefox.

Eagle River Nature Center

www.ernc.org

Mountainering Club of Alaska

www.mcak.org

I was able to access these sites using IE7. Router is a Netgear WPNT834. I
have posted on Netgear's forums but I am not getting any real help. I can
ping the two sites. If I by pass the router I can access the ERNC site but
have not been able to access the Mountaineering site.

I have tried playing with the MTU. I have reset and reinstalled the router.

If anybody can think of any reason why I might not be able to access these
sites I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

We can eliminate the hosts file as a source of the problem.

You forgot to tell us what happens when you try. Does the connection simply
time out? Or do you get an error message? If the latter, please quote it
exactly without paraphrasing. Both sites work fine here w/Firefox under
Ubuntu Linux so the websites aren't down.

Do you have the latest version of Java installed? Look in Add/Remove
Programs and if you have an earlier version than JRE 6 Update 15, uninstall
it and then install JRE 6 Update 15 from:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

I don't believe this is a router issue. What antivirus/security software do
you have installed? Have you tried setting those websites as trusted sites
in your browser?

Did the problem arise after installing IE8 or was there something else?

It gives the message Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage and then
what you can try - Diagnose Connection Problems and More information
buttons.

Norton Antivirus 2009, Zonealarm, WinPatrol.

Have added to trusted sites and even reset the security level to low.

I do not know if it is IE8 causing the problem but I first noticed the
problem since I installed it. I do not go to these sites all the often so
it could very definitely be something besides IE8. It is strange that I can
get into the ERNC site if I by pass the router.

Having Norton *and* Zone Alarm installed is a recipe for disaster. Then
you've got Win Patrol added into the mix. And for all I know you've also
installed some "Internet Security Wizard" from your Internet Service
Provider. Since the same problem occurs in Firefox, you know it isn't just
an IE8 issue.

Here's what I would do if the machine were in my shop:

1. Uninstall Norton, Zone Alarm, and Win Patrol. I'd run the Norton Removal
tool and follow the special Zone Alarm uninstallation instructions.

2. I'd then run CCleaner to get rid of all the temporary and Temporary
Internet Files and clear Firefox's cache. If you use CCleaner, don't use
anything but the cleaning part; leave the registry tools *alone*.

3. Then I'd test if I could get to the websites. If you are behind a router,
doing this doesn't put you at risk, especially since you are just going to
the websites and not clicking on anything.

4. If I could get to the websites, I'd install either NOD32 Antivirus
(commercial), Avast (free), or Avira (free). I'd use the built-in Windows
Firewall. I'd run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) just to
be sure the machine was clean.

So try that and post back with the results. You might be interested in this
article I wrote for my clients. You can download it if you like.

What I also down is rebooted my computer with all of my startup programs
disabled which includes zonealarm, winpatrol, and norton. I have gone into
the task manager and stopped all of the processes related to these programs
and I can still can not get into the websites if I am going through my
router. I also started my IE8 without any add ons.

I don't have anything to add to what I already wrote. Something you've
installed, done, or have running is causing the issue. There is no way for
me to troubleshoot this without seeing the computer.

If it's important to you, figure out the answer and reverse the change. If
you can't do it yourself, have a competent local tech come on-site. This
will not be someone from a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place.

I'm sorry I was unable to help you.
