Can not complete reboot process when restarting WinXPPro

Hello,I am getting the following message,on a black screen during the reboot
process:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

< windowsroot>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please reinstall a copy of the above file"

Could somebody explain what this means?
