Can not burn data or music cds.

I have a DELL 8250 computer. I have been trying to burn photos to cd in order
to free up space on my computer. When I place a cd in my player and attempt
to copy photos to the cd I am being told to insert a cd in the player. My cds
are compatable. This also happens when I try music cds. I originally had
Roxio cd creater 5 installed, but am being told now that that program is
incompatible now with my systems. I had used it in the past. I understand
that I should be able to copy photos to disk without running that program. At
one point I could use my cd player to view photos or play music, but now my
player will no longer do that either. I don't know if I might have screwed
something up trying to solve the problem on my own or not. Troubleshooting
the device does not work. I usually don't understand what they are telling me
to try or do. Or my problem is not listed. Any ideas? Thanks

Probably due
1. the fact that you used other software to copy to CD or DVD. To correct
this simply open My Computer and right click on your CD drive and click on
Properties. Click on the Recording tab and check the box "Enable.....

or, if the box "Enable..." is checked, do the following:

Click on Start and click on Run and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...

Yes Roxio 5 is a problem with XP but check your version, starting at 5.3 it
should be OK.

I opened my computer and right-clicked on CD drive (F) and then clicked on
properies. I do not have a tab for recording. My tabs are General,Autoplay,
Hardware and Sharing. If I click on Hardware a list comes up with my zip
drive, DVD drive, CD drive etc. When I highlight one of the drives and hit on
properties at the bottom of this box anouther box comes up about that drive.
At the bottom there is something called Device usage and under that either
enable or not enable can be clicked on. All of mine are set on enable, but I
don't know if it is the same as what you are talking about. Nowhere in any of
these boxes is a tab for recording. I believe my version of CD creator is
5.2. I did attempt to update this at one time and I think I was told that
roxio is no longer updating 5.

I forgot to tell you that I did run the string you listed and after hitting
enter a box came up saying it was successful. I don't know what that meant.

CD Creator turned off the recording tab. You can get it back by
uninstalling CD Creator. V5 is quite old; they are now up to V9. If I
recall correctly, V5 is not compatible with XP.

Vicki E,

I am running a Toshiba Pentium M 740 and desire to burn all of my pictures
onto CD to back them up. I am getting the same message, "please place a disk
into the drive," I am wondering also if there is a setting that I need to
change. I can watch a DVD on my laptop, but so far, not been able to save
pictures. Anybody know what is going on...please help.

Hey Yves....thank you very much. I have enabled recording and I am up and
running, copying family photo's to my hearts content. Thank you. I hope
Vicki E sees this!
