can not boot windows xp from disk

S

scttmchal

Even though I can boot up just fine and run Windows, I cannot boot from
the Windows XP installation CD (new installation) . It does find the
boot part on the disk, however when it asks you to press any key to
boot from cd nothing happens. I have changed priorty settings in BIOS
etc.....I disabled the hard drive in the BIOS, just to test, rebooted
and for some reason it started to install no problem, obviously this
will not work........any ideas

thanks

You can't boot Windows from the CD. You can do a Clean install, Repair
install or boot to the Recovery Console with the CD.

He means boot to the windows setup from the CD, where he can choose
things like you mention "Clean install, repair install or recovery
console..."

diagnose if this is a problem specific to the win xp cd.
try booting off other CDs.

do you have 2 CD drives? try the other drive too.

try updating your BIOS - a bit of a risk if you get it wrong.

Now, onto a "work around" for your problem

If you want to reinstall windows maybe it can be done without booting
from CD. It might be possible to run the windows xp setup within
windows, then win xp will reboot and do it.
I think that was possible in Win 98, to run D:\setup.exe even from
within windows.

Of course, another thing people did in Win 98 days, was boot from a
boot disk(floppy), and then run setup off the CD. That should be
possible for Win XP too.

Another fix/workaround is to shuffle your CD drives around.
master/slave.
Try a diff IDE cable. Or if you're unlucky, try a few different IDE
cables.

a v unlikely thing is maybe you're using 'cable select' and it has
caused the MBRD ando/or BIOS some confusion.

his error was only in the subject. I was lucky in fogetting what he
wrote in the subject! The contents of what he wrote is clear and
unambiguous AFAI can tell.

wants the install, but he need the hdd enabled to do it] ........any
