Can not access shared folder

I have 2 xp-pro laptops that are join to a
Domain "ABC.com". When the 2 laptops are on a site
office, they are just hooked up to a router with no access
to domain servers(except through VPN). The 2 labtops can
see each other on the LAN, but can not access the shared
folders on either. I am guessing it is because of the
login credentials/authentications. I have tried adding
a "guest" local user account on the laptops and accessing
it with that user id and password. Nothing works right
now. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Assuming that the file/folder is shared, have you tried
adding the "everyone" group to the share, allowing full-
control?
