Can Movie Maker" capture" data from a sony DVD camcorder

Does anyone know if moviemaker is compatible with the sony handycam dvd 300 _ which records onto mini DVD discs.

The sony camcorder only has USB and not firewire which is more the standard for editing software such as Pinnacle studio 8. So movie maker would have to be USB compatible

The other possiblily for being able to capture data would be to finalize the recorded disc and load it into the dvd drive on the computer if Movie maker can capture it that way

My efforts to capture in either method have failed . I even tried to access files captured with a different software to my harddrive but it couldn't recognize them. FYI , the file names ended in .BUP , .IFO , .VO

Hi there,

All that Movie Maker sees is a standard communications system that is part of
windows. For MM or any other suitable program to see your camera as a device
the camera has to be registered in such a way as to conform to the requirements
of the standard interface.

Registration is achieved in a number of ways....

1) Plugging your camera into a previously registered card such as a Firewire
card
2) Plugging the camera into a USB compliant port and if the camera is USB 2
then so must the port be
3) Installing special software related to an external device or card that does
not come under 1 or 2 above.

So, if all is well on your computer and as the camera is a USB type camera plug
it in and then start Movie Maker (after you plug in...thats important) and
select import from camera. I think you are going to have problems though and
that is because USB is not suitable for transfering DV quality images. So you
may want to check if the camera can also run on a firewire.

Good Luck...............

me know if you get an answer. Roger

I don't know anything specific about that camcorder, but it does not require
firewire because it is able to export the movies as files. They don't have
to be played back in real-time to be captured. That is actually a time
saving advantage.

Do you have DVD playing software on your computer? ".VOB" files are playable
by DVD player software (such as WinDVD5 at http://www.intervideo.com, trial
version available). You can rename a ".VOB" to mpeg and maybe then media
player will think it is an mpeg and load it.

What about any software that Sony provided or has on their website?

Please post back. I'm curious about these types of cameras.

I forgot to add: When you connect the camera to the PC doesn't a drive
letter show up in my computer?

Hi David and Roger,
I have the same problem with my Sony 201 DVD Handycam. I have not found a solution yet and I am getting desperate. For now I am just going to use the movie editing software that came with the camcorder, which is ImageMixer version 1.5. But I am not satisfied with this software, it has very limited options. If you know anything new, if you found a different software which is compatible with DVD Handycam, please, please!! let me know. Marketula

See my reply in .video.

USB2 is only faster in short bursts not continuous throughput of info as in
video transfer.

MM2 complies with the video stds of firewire, which is far superior to USB2,
please ask sony why it doesn't use it, it's not M/S 's fault

That is SOOO frustrating! I have the same problem with my Sony
Handycam 101. The camera is great, the problem is the software that
came with it is nothing like WMM! I created awesome movies with WMM
which now I cannot burn onto the camera's DVD as WMM is not
compatible with USB 2.0 technology. That is so ridiculous.
Microsoft: are you listening!??? We NEED a version of WMM compatible
with USB 2.0 technology (which is faster then the firewire anyway...)

What software came with your camera. I have a Sony and have no trouble
capturing to many of my systems. This new laptop I am on now works fine
capturing video. Firewire is the only way to go as it is much faster than
USB2. It is the referred method. I downloaded this free application
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx
which works great.
Forget about USB2 unless you want to transfer photos from digital camera.

I have a sony DVD 300 and am having the same problem as everyone else. I
bought the camera becuse I thought it would be easy to copy the disks onto
the hard drive for later editing. Please post software that will do the job.
ImageMixer does not cut it.
Thank you
