Can I use slower DVD-RW disk on a 8X DVD-RW drive?

Can I use a 2.4X DVD-RW disk on an 8X DVD-RW drive? And, if so, do I have
to tell the DVD drive software that I'm using the slower disk, or can it
figure it out itself?

Yes, and the software will figure out the max media speed itself.

Never seen 2.4X DVD RW[minus].
Are you sure it is not 2.4X DVD RW[plus] or 2X DVD RW[minus]?

It's a DVD+-RW drive. Don't know the brand or model, as my partner
installed it in a new server he put together for our church. We're going to
run a couple more tests this week. I'll get back here later. Thanks for
