Can I use my old XP O/S on a new PC?

My old PC is not working well. It keeps reseteting itself a lot.

Instead of paying for a repair, I might get a new PC. I was told I
cannot use my XP operating ssytem to reload to a new PC or can I?

What is the MS number to call?

If it's a retail license, then you may install the OS on another
machine, provided it's not being used elsewhere. If it's an OEM license
(e.g., the PC came with the operating system installed, such as a Dell
or an HP), then no, it is not transferrable.

Where do you plan on getting your new PC from?

Have you thought of taking a shot at the repair yourself? You could
always post detailed information here and see if others have a workable
solution.

and that might the casue the resetting.

I guess I can bring it in for a quick check of the fan as it does
struggle rotating at times. Once it is up to speed it works fine
though but then the PC goes off anyway,

This is a COMMON problem on commodity fans made from old beer cans.

1. Turn off computer.
2. Remove fan.
3. Take fan to computer shop, say "Gimme one like this."
4. Install fan.
5. Turn on computer.

Yes you can. If any problems just call MS.

Sounds like it may be overheating. Sometimes it's just a matter of
opening up the case and blowing out the dust bunnies.

Yes, you can. When they ask you how many PCs the software is installed on say

It depends. If yours is a retail version, yes, you can move it from
computer to computer without a problem. The only restriction is that
you can not have it two computers at once.

But if yours is an OEM version (for example, if it came with the
computer), then it's license ties it to the first computer it's
installed on, and it can never legally be moved to another computer,
sold, or given away. That's the main reason OEM versions are less
expensive than retail versions.
