Can I use an optical mouse (PS2 port) on a Win98 SE computer?

I need to change the mouse on a Win98 SE personal computer.

I have to use the PS2 port.

Nowadays, optical mice are pretty common.
Can I use an optical mouse on that Win98 SE pc?

If I can, do I need to download a driver (from Microsoft or manufacture)
for the optical mouse?

Yes. Optical or mechanical ball makes no difference to the computer.
I've tried three cheapo opticals with Win98SE, Win98, and Win95:
Iconcepts 4D (Wal-mart sells it under a different brand, maybe GE),
Memorex, and BTC.

No, unless it has nonstandard features, like extra buttons or a second
scroll wheel, but that has nothing to do with the mouse being optical
or having a mechanical ball.
