Have a laptop with XP home, and my desktop has XP pro. Want to upgrade to a
wireless network. Is this possible, or will I have to upgrade the laptop to
Pro first?

All versions of Windows can network with each other. You don't need
to upgrade the laptop.

You do not have to upgrade your operating system. You need to have some
sort of wireless router or wireless access point (assuming you have
broadband) attached to your cable/dsl modem. Then you need wireless
adapters in the computers you wish to connect wirelessly. Here are some
links to help you. Of course you don't have to buy Linksys hardware - I
just think the pictures make it pretty clear.
