Hi ... this is my first post here.

We have a large number of PCs working well with 256K RAM
and Windows XP Pro SP2.

If we upgrade to Vista, realistically, what kind of performance can we expect?

Thank you ...... (e-mail address removed)

None with the present amount of RAM installed.. Vista requires 512mb
minimum.. even running XP, 256mb is not really enough..

To find out more that may need attention, run the Vista Upgrade Advisor..

Not enough information.....but 256k of ram is only about a fourth of what is
needed...You might post what processor and what video hardware you have. I'm
really surprised that you can say that XP Pro worked "well" on 256k.

How many is a large number? If they working well why change them?
Need to find some work for yourself :-) As other have said you would
have to upgrade the memory at the very least. I doubt the investment
would be worth it. We plan to replace XP as we replace our PC's, but
I just purchased 15 PC's and had them shipped with XP and an option
to upgrade. I probably won't move any of the companies PC's to Vista
until I absolutely have to. My home machine? I switched to Vista as soon
as it came out.

Well that posting of yours pretty much sums up Vista. It's an OK toy
operating system for the odd home user, but one wouldn't want to bet their
company and income on it. :-) The Vista Fanboys around here will no doubt
argue with you. But it's nice to see someone with direct experience with
Vista also be realistic about the failings of Vista for any serious work.

With 256 K of ram, not very well <G>.
Even with 256 MB of ram, I really do not see them
performing all that well. I would not look at anything
less than 1 GB of RAM

Now now, Doris

You know very well that companies never take stuff on directly after
release..

Really? WinXP works best with 512Mb of RAM,; those PCs must not be used
very intensinvely.

Does the work "glacial" mean anything to you?

In a word - lousy.
Vista needs 512 and works much better with 1G. In addition a separate video
card with 256 does wonders as well. What you have (you did not give the cpu
so this is guesswork) will load and work but you will not be a happy camper.

:) --- oops ... meant 256MB as you guessed

(my first XT had 256K -- yes K not MB ...
with 256K we got a lot of work done ...
now we just watch hour glasses ... except
in Vista where we watch the wheels spinning :(

thank you Brian ... it's going to cost us a lost of $$$$$
to switch to Vista
