Can I "Protect" the content of a letter, and allow a merge to go?

All of the Protection options are greyed out when I try to protect a document
that has a merge in it.

Basically I would like to provide a form to our clients, so they can merge
there excel file into it, but I want to lock down the Word file, so all they
can do is merge their data.

Any ideas?

you'd need VBA to do that. Not an all too simple task, I'd wager, as
you'd have to cover a couple of different Word releases. Plus reluctance
on your recipients' side to allow macro solutions.
