Can I make a family tree with a diagram in Powerpoint

I am trying to construct a family tree in powerpoint using a box diagram.
However the top hierarchy will not share a space with anyone except those
below it. For example I can't make my grandmother equal with my grandfather's
box. she can only be a subordinate or assistant. How do I get around this and
make the relationship between them a dotted line?

Your trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. PowerPoint is not designed
for this type of structure. You should use something like Visio, or a dedicated
genealogical program. If you then need to display it in PowerPoint, you can
import it.

Copy and paste one of the boxes....move it next to yourgrandfather, then use
the drawing toolbar to make your own line connecting the two.
