can i let word do all the typing while i just speak over a mike?

Sort of, if you have a version that includes Speech Recognition.

MS Office XP/2002 and Office 2003 include 'dictation' as an optional installation feature through the Microsoft Office choice in
Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel. You can get a result in Word through training of the app to recognize your voice
and speech patterns but you probably can't rely on it to do 'all' of the typing.

There are also 3rd party packages, such as Dragon Naturally speaking (http://nuance.com) that are stronger in this area.

My suggestion would be Dragon Naturally Speaking.

The "Dictation" Bob refers to works ONLY in the American language (i.e. You
have to set your text and system languages to US English or it won't run,
and you have to have an American accent or it won't work...)
