can i just connect 2 pc's?

I think i may be missing something here, can i just stick a network cable
between my 2 computers' network cards to share stuff?

Yes. Use a crossover Ethernet cable (which reverses the send and
receive wires between the ), not a regular Ethernet cable. Run the
Network Setup Wizard on both computers, which will make all the right
settings for file and printer sharing.
