Can I install Vista Upgrade on other than intended computer?

I apologize if this question has been answered before. (I did a search and
did not find anything relevant.)

I bought an Averatec AV2150-EH1 laptop back in February that came pre-loaded
with WinXP Home. I ordered the free upgrade to Vista Home Premium but
haven't received it yet. I recently found out however that upgrading the
memory on the Averatec voids the warranty! It came with two 256 MB sticks
so I don't think it will run Vista very well and I will probably just stay
with WinXP on that computer. So my question is, when I finally get the
Vista upgrade DVD, will I be able to install it on another WinXP computer,
or will the Vista license somehow be tied to the Averatec laptop?

Thanks in advance for any information or advice you may be able to offer!

Vista Upgrade offer can only be installed on your Averatec computer.

Carey, I was hoping for a different answer, but thanks much for your reply.
I will probably wait until the 1-year warranty runs out on the Averatec and
then upgrade the memory and install Vista. Probably not a bad idea to wait
awhile yet before installing Vista anyway. Thanks again! -- Jim

I would assume that it's upgrade is licensed under an OEM license, and would
be tied to the machine.

what kind of upgrade is this??? Normally you can chose to upgrade any
computer you wish..

why did carey say that you cant??

Are you sure that increasing the memory in your Averatec unit will void your
warranty? A memory chip is just a plug-in device. Inserting it is no more
difficult and no more complicated than inserting your laptop battery.

I suggest that you take a closer look at your warranty. If what you say is
true, I would stay away from that brand in the future.

I have been working on (and upgrading) computers for nearly 20 years and
have never heard of such a thing before and believe me, I was shocked when I
found out. On most laptops, there is a cover on the back that you can
typically remove in a few seconds to access the memory.

That is not the case on this particular Averatec model though. (I do not
know about other models of Averatec models.) On this one you have to remove
several screws on the back and then lift up the keyboard on the front to
access the memory. Covering one of the screws on the back is a strip that
says "Warranty Sticker / Void if tampered" and apparently they mean it. I
probably would not have bought this laptop had I known about this "no
upgrade" policy in advance. -- Jim

I believe that upgrade then must be tied with that specific laptop since its
a free upgrade to
XP that was preinstalled (OEM).

If you send it back to the company you bought it from, for the ram upgrade
will that avoid the warrantee????? I must suppose they mean if you go buy
ram yourself and upgrade it!

Since you got vista free why not try it anyway? Everything depends on what
you use the pc for.
BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST THOUGH! Just in case you decide to go back to Vista.
The most important factor is the display adaptor on this
laptop. Does it support GLASS??? If it doesn't .. then the experience of
vista will not be so good.

A tip... it may have 512 mb only BUT if you use a USB stick with vista
readyboost,
it will improve the speed, not as much as normal ram.. but it will help a
bit.

If you already have a USB 2 flash ram stick you can try it...

if you plan on getting a new one make sure it is made to work with
readyboost.

I hope this information helps....

Thanks for the good advice on the USB drive. I may just go ahead and image
the drive of the Averatec laptop, then try Vista. I am pretty sure the
video adapter will not support aero anyway, so Vista may just run half-way
decently with only 512 MB with the help of a large readyboost drive. Thanks
again!
