Can I go to 2003 functional level with NT4 BDCs?

I am at the planning stage, so this is a hypothetical
question!

I will have NT4 BDC's which also act as file/print
servers in my 2003 (functional level 2000) domain and
forest.

Assuming that there will be sufficient Win 2003 DCs to
serve the domain and I now wish to raise the domain and
forest to 2003 functionality, is it strictly neccessary
to remove the NT4 BDC's first? I would like to keep them
in place as file/print servers etc. Obviously they would
lose their BDC functionality.

These are old boxes and do not meet the recommended
hardware requirements for 2003.

You can change your domain to functional level 1. This gives additional
Windows 2003 functionality to your domain with NT4 domain controllers
present but you cannot have any Windows 2000 domain controllers in the
domain. See
