I bought a bare bones Dell home edition XP 2005. I miss microsoft office 97,
I have a disc. can I download it or do I have to get something else? If so is
there a free download through microsoft?

No free download. Did your Office disk come with an old computer or did you
buy it from some place like Office Max?

If the CD that you have is a retail version of Office 97, that is, it did
not come pre-installed on another computer, you can, if you have the Product
Key for it, install it on your new computer. If it came installed on an
earlier computer, the licence only allows you to use it on that computer.

You can download a trial version of Office 2003 from
http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx
