Can I convert Adobe PDF files to WORD DOC. ?

I have downloaded a book into Adobe Acrobat Reader 7. I would like to convert
this book to a word document so I can get it into my palm computer. I need to
do this with as little expense as possible. I am low on funds right now.

You won't be able to do this without additional software - see
http://www.verypdf.com/ as a start point.
If you have a scanner it may come with OCR software that can handle PDF, or
you could print it from Acrobat Reader and OCR the prints.

A quick-and-dirty method if you just want the text without any formatting is
to install a generic text printer on port FILE:, then print the PDF to it.
The result is a .prn file which is plain text and will open in Word,
Notepad, etc.

I tried this. All I got was a bunch of jumbled numbered letters and numbers.
Maybe I don't understand. Like I said, I don't know much about it.
Jezebel, do you have any helpful hints as to what I am doing wrong.
I installed a brothers printer in file port. Printed to it. Then tried to
open it in Word and Note pad. I could not make out either one.
Thanks for the help.

It's a generic/text printer that you need to add and not an actual printer.
Generic text is one of the default printer types that you can add from the
control panel applet. As its name implies it outputs to a plain text file -
unlike the Brother driver which outputs code that a Brother printer would
understand.

To be even more specific, look for the "Generic / Text Only" listing in the
printer selection in Windows.

I went to control panel to printers and installed Generic Text only. I
printed to it. I opened it in word. All I got was the same mumbo jumbo. I
think you for trying to help. I guess I am just beyond help. He He
I think I will look the book over and if I like it, I will order the
program Mr. Graham suggested and see if I am smart enough to use that.
Thanks for the help.
