By mistake, while trying to reconfigure some botup and shut down problems I
changed the settings in the registry that now when I turn on my comp and log
in on my administrator user password the computer shuts down and reboots
again to the point where the user password is for me to reenter my apssword,
only to shut down and rebot by itself again...time and time repeatedly.

I know where the error lies, but can not access if because I can not get
past my log in point.

Even through safe mode and using my disk to start up, this problem
stilloccurs whenever windows boots up.

However I don't have this problem with DOS...so is there a way that I can
change my settings to the registry from DOS?

Please e-mail me, because I don't see any info on this on the net.

1. Which registry settings did you alter, specifically?
2. You know where it lies, but forgot to mention it (probably
Userinit.exe,)
3. This can be solved via the Recovery Console, depending on how far you
have gone.
4. No e-mail. Asked here, answered here.

You cannot edit it from DOS, What I suggest for this problem is to Set
the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of
Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested
is blank, and TAB over. At this recovery console, use
CD to get the prompt down to
C:\Windows\system32\config >
and there
COPY SOFTWARE.BAK SOFTWARE
(or if SOFTWARE.BAK turns out not to be there
COPY SOFTWARE.SAV SOFTWARE )

Note that the file you copy to - the working registry one - has no
extension.

That should allow you to manage a boot of a sort - enough to run System
Restore back to a point made before the trouble arose
