Can Firefox co-exist with Mozilla ?

I would like to install FireFox, but I currently have Mozilla 1.4

Since FireFox comes from the same family as Mozilla,
I was concerned that they might share similar parameters
(and similar folders) and therefore they might clash.

Do I have to un-install Mozilla before installing FireFox,
or does it not matter?

Mozilla and Firefox store their settings in separate locations (called
profies), so as long as you install Firefox to it's own directory you
should have no problems.

Firefox will probably offer to import your settings the first time you
run it. This will transfer up your bookmarks, homepage etc.

No need to uninstall Mozilla. That's not a problem. Since the program
directories are different and the profile locations are different as well.

I have Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird running on my system. They work
just fine...

They'll work perfectly because both install directories and profile
directories are separate by default.
However, they'll fight to become the default browser (let Firefox win,
it's smaller) and they'll probably import each other's bookmarks only
once when they are installed (I suggest surfing with only one browser
and copying its new bookmarks to the other's profile).
For mail, what about Thunderbird instead of the Mozilla client?

First, update to Mozilla 1.7.7. Many enhancements, and security fixes!
Second, Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla 1.7.7 can coexist just fine, along
with other broswers, and email/news programs.
No problem.
