Can Excel find & sort one item in all the cells in a column?

Can Excel find & sort one item in all the cells in a column? My list
contains items that I want to assign to one or more categories in a single
'categories' column. If I assign a numeral to each category, then some items
will have one numeral and some will have several. Is there a way to enter
all the category numbers in ONE CELL for each item, and then make the filter
read every entry that has a particular numeral in it (e.g., filtering for
numeral 1 would find 12, 13, 134, 1, etc)? I'm trying to make this filter
work like a Word search, and can't figure out how to do it. Ideas?

Hi

With your dropdown for the filter in say column G, with a header in row
1, select the dropdown >Custom>
=--LEFT(G2)=1

I'm missing something here. What is the 'dropdown for the filter'? I can't
seem to do anything that gives me a 'custom' option. Newbie at this.

Apply data>filter>autofilter, since you mentioned filter Roger assumed that
you already had it applied
