Can Connect at 10, can't at 100

Hello all.

I have 2 computers both on WinXP, and using a 10Mbps ADSL Router. I bought a
Conceptronic C100S8 10/100 Mbps switch to have a high-speed local network.
One computer connects to the switch at 100 Mbps, but the other will only
connect at 10. I have downloaded the latest drivers for my NIC, but it still
doesn't work.

2 Computers >>>> 100Mbps Switch >>>> 10 Mbps ADSL Router >>>>
256kbps Internet

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try to switch the wires and see if the speed of each is switched.

I have tried that, and it's the same. All the ports are autosense
speed and all are upload also. And it doesn't matter if the cables
are straight or crossover.

Thanks for the input

Try locking the speed and duplex down instead of using autosensing.

Hi Robert.

I downloaded the latest drivers for the LAN card, and I've just
finished flashing the BIOS (something quite frightening, but very
easy when you know how) and still the same. Can't find anything on
the ECS website :(

I moved the computers around, so that I was using the same cable from
the computer that does connect at 100 Mbps, but no difference.

And the cables are 'Verified TIA / EIA CAT 5' cables.

It seems like I'm running out of options.

Well I hate to admit this but I'm stumped :-(
Maybe someone else can step up to the plate with some ideas for you...

ok this is officially weird.

Are you using the most up-to-date drivers for that chipset LAN card?
Have you checked to see if the mobo manufacturers have any bios updates that
might adjust LAN card stuff or any notes on this on their website.

Did you say you'd swapped the cables around and the fault stayed with this
computer? If not (e.g. you haven't swapped the cables) I'd wonder if the
cable concerned was a CAT3 cable (only rated for 10mb) rather than cat 5 or
cat 5e (current spec for 100mb or 1000mb for cat5e)
