Can anyone recommend a good free process watcher utility?

TaskMgr will give you most all the details - if you add a few
columns to the normal display.

Just open Taskmgr, Processes (TAB) click View, Select columns
and add the following:
Memory Usage
Peak Memory Usage
VM Size
Page Faults

Avast processes are easily recognized in the process name field.
The thing with Avast is it by default turns on all it's sub components.
If you don't need all of them you can "Terminate" certain ones to
cut back on it's memory footprint.

The MS beta anti-spyware seems to be quite a memory hog, too.

You're saying that as if you think that having more free would be
better, but that's not the case.

Wanting to minimize the amount of memory Windows uses is a
counterproductive desire. Windows is designed to use all, or
nearly all, of your memory, all the time, and that's good not
bad. Free memory is wasted memory. You paid for it all and
shouldn't want to see any of it wasted.
Windows works hard to find a use for all the memory you have all
the time. For example if your apps don't need some of it, it will
use that part for caching, then give it back when your apps later
need it. In this way Windows keeps all your memory working for
you all the time.

Win2K's built-in Task Manager and Performance monitor are designed for
this purpose.

my performance monitor show nothing. Not even a graph and the task manager
is ok for showing processes that are running, but I can't seem to drill
down and see the dll's and exe running under each one. Sysinternals stuff
is seemingly easier to use for that.

Sounds normal and nothing to worry about. Still, as of course when you
go and run your other programs the remaining 175 can be used up in a
snap. You really want 512 minimum ram installed for XP anyway. If you
will be working with large files and such tho, consider a gig of ram.

Performance Manager (Start->Control Panel->Admininstration
Tools->Performance) may help.

I'd say that you have far too much free RAM. My system runs
fine with 64MB free. Windows should be using as much as it
can, because then when stuff needs to run it doesn't need to
be loaded from disk. If you don't have enough RAM paging
would start to rise. You can check that in Performance Manager.
