Hi (I inadvertently posetd this in the Windows Xp media Centre Edition
Newsgroup - sorry - it should have been here)

This is work I am doing as an unpaid volunteer in the Finance Dept. for a
local charity.

I have designed a database in MS Access and it is contained in a secure
folder within the Finance Dept. filestore.
I have a MS InfoPath page which is located in the non secure part of the
Finance Dept. filestore.
The Cafe use the MS InfoPath page to submit daily takings to the accounts
database.

We have our remote Windows XP support provided by a volunteer.
We have difficulty in making too many demands on his time.

Can we have a user account created in our Windows XP environment with the
following conditions -
1. Email - send and receive = YES
2. MSNMessenger = NO
3. Internet Brwoser = NO
4. MS Word = NO
5. MS Excel = YES
6. MS InfoPath = YES
7. MS Access = NO
8. MS Power Point = NO
9. MS Notepad = YES
10. Filestore = 0 bytes
11. Access to C Drive = NO
12. Access to desktop = YES

Will such a user account be possible?
It will be a special account used only for Finance Data submission.

Thanks

Jay

Active Directory would be the way to go... but here are some other
ideas

If you do not need Word Access Power Point etc on the PC then uninstall
office and only install the parts you need (during the install click
custom).

If you do need these programs on the PC but you just don't want the
user to get to them, then change the rights to the folders that contain
the programs you don't want him to use. Just right click on the
folders and go to sharing and security, you can add admins while
restricting the other users acces to the files/programs.

Also go to start - control panel - Administrative Tools - Local
Security Settings, then click on Local Policies...
-You can restrict a lot of stuff for just Users from here.

But only with xp professional can you do this not home.

Have a look at Microsoft's Shared Computer Toolkit.

Hi

Everybody

Thanks for all the suggestions. As I suspected it can be done with a little
care and diligence.

I have posed the same request to the self styled guru who does our remote
support and let's see what he does. Usually it takes weeks and then it's all
wrong as well.

One comment I shall make is that the PC must have all of Office Professional
on it as other user logins will require it.

The restricted login is simply because we only wish Financial returns made
using this user account.

Thanks and I shall post a reply when it's accomplished successfully by the
remote support person.

Hi Jon

Thanks. It is Office Professional running on Windows XP Professional.

The Pc requires it's normal Office aplications and only this specific user
account has to have the restrictions.

Let me reply again once the remote support person has succeeded or (......
yawn) it may be a long while as it usually takes weeks for him to get simple
things right.

To me it comes naturally as for nearly 18 years I ran secure UNIX
environments for defence, finance and R&D, but naturally I am now a business
user in the Microsoft world.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply.

Hi Gil

It is MS Windows XP professional running Office professional so let's see
how the remote support gets on.

Thanks
