Can a removable storage device be renamed?

I have 2 internal drives. One is a CD rom drive, the other is a DVD rom
drive. Drive (E:) is the CD Rom drive. Drive (D:) is the DVD drive. However
Windows XP names the DVD drive as a CD drive only. CD Drive (D:). How can I
rename it to read CD/DVD Drive (D:)? Or CD-DVD Drive (D:)?

Yes, I read that tech article yesterday. But I don't want to change my drive
letter assignments. I was meaning in My Computer view. I can right click on
all my hard drives, even 3 1/2 Floppy and rename them. That option isn't
available for my cd and dvd drives.

Hi!
I am not sure, but I think the reason is that the description changes
according to the content of the disk inserted, (also the file system is
unknown until you insert a disk)
Tried it myself, came up with the same result.
I am happy for you, that this is your only problem with your machine.
Cheers

Hello,

If that's the case then please visit
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and use the vbscript on line
191 (on the left side).

As for drives itself... I don't believe you can change the drive label to
something else, besides what difference would it make. The drive label just
defines the type of drive it is and nothing more, so you can't change the
name for that.

I think that when I had Windows Me my (D:) drive was listed in my computer
as CD-DVD (D:). When I upgraded to XP that drive is now listed as a CD drive
only. Just wondering why?

Those two operating systems have substantial differences. XP did not evolve
from ME, but from NT. I notice my XP calls my DVD RAM/CD drive a CD drive
just as your does. Oh well. Surely you can associate the letter with the
type of drive in your own mind, regardless of what the computer calls it?

Hi!
Agree with that.
Actually my comp. will display the proper description like "DVD-RW
drive" and "CD-RW drive", (can't change it), maybe it only displays
"CD" when you have read only drives? In a way, it makes sense because
you can read a CD as well with a DVD drive.
I still think, that this should be the biggest problem one can have!
Cheers

Thanks Rishi, that website (line 191 to be exact) did the trick.
Annabelle, go to that site and use the script. It worked and I renamed my
drive to what I wanted it to read.

Now if I could also change it's name under "TYPE"( listed as a cd drive) in
My Computer view, then I'd REALLY be thrilled. lol
