Can a 5.25 drive be usb portable?

N

needin4mation

I have seen USB 3.5 drives for sale, but can't find any 5.25 drives
that are USB for sale. I know it's old and out of use, but I need a
5.25" floppy drive that is portable. Is there a kit or product anyone
can refer me to? Thank you.

But, apparently not this on that page:

| Q: Will this read the older 5.25 flexible floppy disks?
|
| A: No, this drive reads and writes the normal 3.5 inch
| HD 1.44 and DD 720K floppy disks.

Don't take my remarks, however, as any attempt to diminish your intentions.

My bad. Google is still good though.

If it is a necessity, you could purchase a 3.5" drive and pull the
electronics out of it and plug them into a 5.25" drive. The interfaces
should be identical between the two. Not sure about power requirements
though, so you may need to find a drive to cannibalize that comes with a
power supply.

Tell us why you can't transfer the data to a more modern media.

There is some discussion in other forums that USB floppies have been
simplified to the point of having its USB and drive controller logic
inseparably joined, into one chip or logic board. At any rate, the
drive does not appear to be mounted in a distinct USB enclosure.

I need the disk drive to do just that.

Can you find a machine that already has an internal 5.25 floppy (or buy
one for $5 and install it,) and make a one-time transfer of all of your
data to a more supported media--3.5" floppy, CD-R or memory card?

Given that you've been stingy with you descriptions in the past, I
hasten to add:

If not, why not?

I believe from what everyone is saying that this is close to the only
route that makes sense right now. I thought I was just overlooking
some obvious USB 5.25 floppy drive out there somewhere. I'm going to
have to get an old drive from an old machine and put it in a new
machine. Using the old machine wouldn't be helpful in this context.
Thanks everyone.

It's occurred to me that if you're willing to shell out the bucks, you
might be able to commission someone to make one.

There are still systems around that you might be able to use if you are in
an area like mine you will find them in libraries and schools. You can
transfer files from floppies to HDD and back to floppy disc that has built
in mem cards usually used for Digital Cameras.
