Can 98SE be used with this motherboard to upgrade to XP?

Hi,

I hope to upgrade an old pc, with a Biostar GeForce 6100-M9
motherboard. Biostar website states that the supported OS's are
Win2000 and WinXP. If my OEM copy of Win98 SE is not supported with
the motherboard, does that mean 98SE cannot be loaded and I'd have to
buy a full version of the supported operating systems to have a
working pc? Thank you, for any help and advice.

You don't need to install Win98 SE to use as an upgrade qualifier. All you
need is the Win98 SE cd. When you run the Windows XP Upgrade set up
somewhere along the line you will simply need to put the Win98 SE cd into
the cdrom and point the XP installer Upgrade to it.

That's a relief. Thanks, Merlin!

do you have a windows disc or a manufacturer's restore disk?

It's a "For distribution with a new PC only. For product support,
contact the manufacturer of your PC." Microsoft disc.

Since, my budget is so small, I was wondering if it would be alright
to try and install Win98SE in the motherboard indicated below.

You won't get past the installation procedure. If you find the workaround
for the 2.2 GHz problem, you also have to contend with lack of drivers.
Then there's the RAM limitation. Once working, there's more regarding hard
drive capacity and partition size because of the OS system files.

Hi,

My 2 cents,

Make sure you have right drivers for XP before doing the installation, and
LAN card driver (onboard chip or PCI card) is more important because if you
couldn't be online, you won't be able to update Windows and download
additional drivers and cannot activate XP online and have to make a phone
call.

So IMHO, LAN card is the most important one to get it started first.

Good luck.

Thanks, for explaining what will happen.

I thought I could build a pc for someone, that would be affordable.
Started out with a 450MHz motherboard and purchased a Antec NSK 4400,
80GB hdd, FDD, cables. Then found out about BIOS drive limitation,
and a non-working CD-ROM. Now, trying to find a systemboard and cpu,
heatsink/fan, replacement optical drive, and also need Windows XP. I
should have just bought an eMachines like mine. It works well for
money.

Okay. My pc has Internet access. It is similar to having just one
floppy drive or monitor, when two are needed. :)

Thank you.
