I have recently downloaded and installed Zone Alarm, and was wondering
if it would be best to turn off my XP Firewall?

Thanks!

Yes, I recommend only using one firewall, so use the best one (which would
be zone alarm)

DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR XP FIREWALL !!
It's ok to run both firewalls, they complement each other, it's recommended
that You, for no reazon turn off the Windows XP firewall since it is the
main defence against the Blaster worm, Zone Alarm on the other hand, by
itself, does not protect against the blaster as it has been posted in
several forums during the past weeks. To be fully protected you need to:
Keep your XP Firewall on,
Update your system,
Install critical security patch MS-03-039
Update your antivirus software.

Bruce :
Would you be more specific with your reply?,
What part of the post do You disagree with?
That both firewalls can't be on?
That XP Firewall is better?
That Zone Alarm is vulnerable?

I agree that XP Firewall is not effective in stoping the Blaster worm in all
cases, in particular when people mistakenly download the bogus patch, but
that has noting to do with the firewall. Ok.. I agree XP Firewall is not
the main defence against the Blaster worm, the Critical Security Patch
MS03-039 is, but the cuestion was about the firewall.
It's been posted repeatedly by MS-MVP's that you should never turn XPF off,
and that it's the best Firewall known to date. On some forum one MVP posted
that Zone Alarm Firewall was vulnerable in cases when XP Firewall was
substituted by ZA, this was posted about a month ago, so maybe ZA was
updated some time in the past month and I didn't know about it.
As to running two Firewalls, an answer to the original post was that it was
better to run a single Firewall,... I am running both XPF and Sygate and
have had no trouble at all, some configuration was needed but that was it.
I would appreciate if You'd clarify where my mistake was, as it would be to
my own benefit.
Thanks in advance.

Greetings --

Running two software firewalls simultaneously to unnecessary and
can cause conflicts, possibly negating the protection of both. In any
event, having two firewalls running simultaneously is an unnecessary
drain on system resources.

ZoneAlarm is far superior to WinXP's built-in firewall, and is not
vulnerable to Blaster unless it's been misconfigured. (WinXP's
firewall, after SP1, will also protect the PC from blaster.)

You should not turn the WinXP firewall off, _except_ when you have
another firewall in place. And what MVP is claiming that WinXP's
firewall is the best? I'd really like to see that post.

Jose;
I am curious to see your references for the following:
"It's been posted repeatedly by MS-MVP's that you should never turn
XPF off, and that it's the best Firewall known to date"
"On some forum one MVP posted that Zone Alarm Firewall was vulnerable
in cases when XP Firewall was substituted by ZA"

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall is very good at what and how
it is designed to work, but most 3rd party firewalls are better if for
nothing else they also block outgoing traffic.
Even the best firewall is easily defeated if it is improperly used.

An easier way to read newsgroup messages:

http://dts-l.org/index.html

My understanding from the Beta program was that ICF was designed to
work in conjection with Zone Alarm.
