Camera Driver Problem

Ever since upgrading to SP2 on my Sony PCG-GRT360ZG laptop, whenever I
connect my high-end digital camera to an Adaptec FireConnect IEEE 1394 PC
Card, the software for the camera does not recognize that the camera is
connected.

When I go into Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to
the driver. I then have to uninstall the driver, restart and reinstall the
driver with the camera connected. Everything works fine until I 1)
disconnect and reconnect the camera for whatever reason or 2) shut down and
restart the computer. Either way, even with the card and camera connected, I
must again go through uninstalling and reinstalling the driver steps and
restarting - everytime!

I noticed there was an IEEE1394 patch locatied at:

www.microsoft.com/downloa...layLang=en

It is supposed to correct some IEEE capture device issues. I downloaded and
installed it, but it didn't make a darn bit of difference. The funny thing is
that I use this same camera and software on a Dell tower and do not
experience this problemat all. Only on the Sony laptop.

I have also tried uninstalling the IEEE 1394 Controller and rebooting to
have it freshly installed and this doesn't help either.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Are you sure that you should install the driver while the camera is
connected. The usual way is to install the driver and then connect the
camera. I would check you camera manual again, you may be doing it correctly
but this is certainly not the usual way for loading drivers.

The capture software for the camera installs the driver as well. When I
uninstall the driver and then use the Add Hardware Wizard to find the best
driver, the driver that it selects has the specific name of my camera. It is
not some generic driver being installed.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the software to have the driver reinstalled
makes no difference in solving the problem. I know of no other way to
reinstall the driver.

Tell me what kind of camera you have. Is this a digital camera or digital
camcorder?

Now I get it.
Long shot but if you have antivirus software installed, disable it before
installing your software for this camera and see if this makes a difference.

I've tried this in the past as well, again with no success.

I have also called my dealer, as well as the manufacturer. The dealer said
others have reported the problem as well. The problem is sporadic among users
and there seems to be no answer as yet. Nor any rhyme nor reason when and to
whom it will most likely happen to.

At least I have a work around to get it working. I discovered that I do not
have to restart the computer to get the driver reinstalled. Just have to
uninstall the driver and then start the Add New Hardware Wizard.

Sorry I can't help further. I have a capture software for a Konica Minolta
A1, but it works via a USB port, while you are working via a Fire Wire port.
Installing mine, I did have to disable the Norton antivirus for it to work,
so I made the suggestion. Hope you can resolve this problem and you will
take the time to post your solution here.
You have a very unique (and very nice) camera and probably we will not have
anybody posting this kind of problem here with this kind of camera. But we
all learn something. So let us know.

I appreciate your attempt to help.

Although it is unlikely anyone in this forum would own a similar camera and
digital back, I thought maybe someone else with any other camera which
utilized IEEE1394 might have experienced a similar problem.

Again, Thanks!
