Calendar sharing through Microsoft closing - now what?

H

Hugh Jeego

Hi all,

I guess this may have been discussed before but I only found out a short
time ago and thought it was a bug on my end to begin with.

I have a work laptop on which is a work related calendar that I have been
publishing to Microsoft calendars online so I can then get it on my home
computer and check it. I can only edit it from the laptop but I can view
what I am up to, the next day, while at home.

Recently, I couldn't upload to it nor download at home from it. So I went
through everything, deleting the calendar and attempting to share again and
all that to no success. I followed help links to Outlook 2007 shared
calendars on the Calendar section at Microsoft and they say that what is
being discontinued is the ability to alter the calendar through logging on
with a web browser due to Outlook 2010 coming out soon. It said that Outlook
2007 upwards can still use the function and only alter from your computer's
Outlook. Unfortunately I cant do that. I can add a calendar ONLY if I click
on CHANGE ACCOUNT under Internet Calendars and enter the same username and
password that have always been there but I cannot view it using my Outlook
2007 at home. It just will not connect. Then, disconnect from Internet and
logon again then try to update the calendar on the laptop and it wont do it
and I have to start all over again, deleting the calendar, etc etc.

Does anyone have any way that an Outlook 2007 calendar can be shared,
anymore, without access to Exchange? I need to be able to publish and update
the calendar on my laptop and then view it on my home computer. That's it.

Thanks for any help.

Since approx Dec 19, there is a problem with the calendar server. The
inability to log into Office Online and view the calendar & appointments
should not affect the ability to publish and share the calendar, once the
problem affecting many of us the past week or so, is fixed.

Diane,

If you logon using a web browser and check things there, Microsoft actually
SAY that because Outlook 2010 is coming, this feature is closing. I
understood that to be for good. I may be wrong and maybe it is only until
they update so Outlook 2010 and 2007 can both use it but to be honest, I
have to say I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end of it.

As to it not affecting - yes it definitely does! I can no longer upload from
my Outlook 2007 to the Microsoft server no matter what I do and I cannot
download on the other machine either. So, it has stopped me dead in my
tracks being able to update my calendar at work and keep up to date with
what is going on at home. I don't imagine I am the only one who cant do it
any longer. I can change account and logon with the same details as always
and all works ONCE when uploading but though you can share it, the other end
cannot download it. Yes, it DOES affect the ability to publish and share. It
closes it right down in fact!

I have been looking for alternatives where I can put my calendar online
securely because of this. I found that the email reading program Horde
allows this and I can read my work email using a web browser and Horde. I
just haven't worked out how to upload with my Outlook 2007 on the work
machine yet. I have to say this lot is beyond me right now.

What I am saying is what they are ending - the rendering of calendars in the
webpage - is not going to prevent you from publishing and sharing the
calendars. The people you share with will need to use outlook or another
calendar application to view the events, they can't go to office online and
view the calendar.

However, there is something wrong with the site - publishing is not working,
we can't log in with our LiveID and publish the calendars. Once this is
fixed, then we will be able to publish calendars and share them with others.

My assumption (not confirmed) is that when they disabled the rendering
service it also messed up publishing.

Diane:
Thank you for assuring me that I'm not alone. I figure that they stopped the
web based view of the calendars and then disabled everything inadvertently.
Not very good testing, piloting, or deploying (naughty programmers)--not sure
I'd want to be loading 2010 anytime soon ;-).

Is there anyway to contact them without paying fortune to find out when the
fix will be available?

Try this workaround - its supposed to work but isn't working for me.
Go to office.com and sign in with the same Live ID you use to publish your
calendar and select "Save my e-mail address and password", Outlook should
work just fine after restarting to publish or update a subscribed calendar
again, until you sign out of Office Online and/or LiveID.

I finally got it working- but I'm not sure which step fixed it. I deleted
passwords belonging to my liveid addresses in control panel, user accounts,
I deleted cookies (I have 2 liveids and thought that might be causing
problems), logged into office.com, signed out, closed the browser, logged
back into office.com and saved the user/password <== don't forget to do
this. Closed the browser and outlook, opened both - it worked. I might have
tried something else too - oh, I set my cookie policy in Control panel,
internet options to always allow from microsoft.com and added microsoft.com
to the trusted zone for browsing.

I *think* deleting the cookies and closing the browser was the trick, but
have no way of proving it.

My simple way around it is to save the calendar to desktop, upload it to a
directory on my own domain where that directory has no link and then
subscribing, on the other computer(s) to that same calendar on that hidden
link. It works perfectly but it does mean that if you want subscribers to
see updates, you have to manually save the calendar on the machine that has
the changing data and manually upload it to that spot for the rest to
automatically pick up the changes. A simple way to do it that doesn't
require a real lot of thought and only about 5 minutes to set up. Also takes
about 30 seconds to update thereafter.

Makes me wonder why Microsoft haven't noticed this problem and come out with
a fix but I guess the time of year may be why.

Time of year was a definite factor and I'm not so sure they noticed it on
their own.
