Calendar control today method not working until form reload (?)

I have a calendar control in a form. In the form load event I have

calendar_start.today
calendar_end.today
(two calendars in form)

when I type the period 'today' does not appear in the list
when I type in as above and open the form the calendar does not default to
today until I go into design mode, then return to form view. Then the date
is okay.

What am I missing? Is this a bug?

The calendar controls are not bound to any fields and I am using Access 2003
