Calculating From A Text Field

I am presently running a sales database on Approach and i am looking to
convert to Access (which I have little experience of).

I am presently inputting sales data into text fields based on the following
format Y = in stock no sale , X = not in stock no sale, 1 = 1 unit sale, (1)
= 1 unit sale as an introduction, etc as appropriate for no. of unit sales or
introduction.

Within Approach I can calculate the absolute value and y and x default to
zero and I can then drive all calculations from there in respect of unit sold
and/or stocking levels and any changes.

In Access the ABs value of y and x default to #error and no calculations can
be derived.

The basis of the question is how can I maintain the present recording and
input procedure (i.e. using y,x,1,2,(1),(2), etc) and derive calculations -
i.e how do I derive calculations for text fields or any other smart way
around the problem or is this a cardinal sin ?

Regards and Thanks for reading

What kind of calculations do you want to do? Counts would not be too
difficult.

I think I would rather offer a click on a button on a form and then
allow that button to input a code into the field to assure accurate input.
I suspect I might want a different design than you are using, but I would
want to know more about all this different types and what you are planning
to use the data for (how you want to report it or calculate it?)

I need to be able to calculate the total unit sales across six products for
sixty people in four teams-

as I have inputs of : 1 etc fortop up sales
and :(1) for introductory sales

etc. if I take absolute values forthese I can then calculate the unit sales
for each product by each sales person, by each team.

In addtion by conducting search calculations I can calculate the stocking
levels for each product by knowing a product is in stock if I search for
y,1,(1) ....etc and then calculate this by person and by team.

Whilst a button on a form may overcome the problem the amount of potential
inputs per product (unit sales can be 20 so 20+ buttons for top sales and
similarly for introductions etc) may negate this as a solution -

Any other ideas would be appreciatted.

Thanks
