calculating a new field from 2 values in the same field

I can not find my original post, but about 1 month ago someone helped me with
a question relating to producing a new field with all of the previous values
from the original field (the purposes was to be able to use pythagoras to
calucalte the distance moved using xy coordinates on a 2 d plane). Anyway,
they suggested I use DLookUp, which works just great. However, they warned me
that it would be slow if there were a lot of values and mentioned another
method that would work. does any one know how else this could be done?
 
The messages are kept here only so long. I would recommend going to Google
and searching the newsgroup from there.
