I'd like to know which RS-232 cable is needed between this barcode scanner's
modem port and the RS-232 port of a PC : a straight or a crossed one?

I would guess a straight one.

Very seldom is a crossed cable used.
The only time a crossed cable is used is when you are connecting a computer
to another computer.

Besides if you get a straight cable you can always use a NULL modem adapter
if needed.
