Cable modem problem, bear with me...

..while I explain!

Sorry if this is a bit long but I want to make sure I've explained
everything necessary to avoid wasting anyone's time with things I've already
tried etc!

Firstly, I am running XP Pro with IE6 and had a broadband cable connection
with NTL. WEll, a thunderstorm last Thursday blew out my cable modem and I
was told they couldn't fix it until Monday so, needing the internet
everyday, I ressurrected my former dial-up connection to use in the meantime
albeit an extremely slow and expensive alternative!

The engineer came this afternoon and replaced the blown cable modem with a
new - just plugged it in and off he went in a tearing hurry without
bothering to check it or answer any questions I may have. I assumed it
would be a simple case of reversing the process I had done to get my dial up
back but nothing seems to be able to connect to the internet via this new
modem! According to Wizards and Troubleshooters the modem is installed
properly and is working properly and it shows as connected by the icon. I
uninstalled and re-installed, re-booted etc a couple of times but still the
same problem.

The only thing I notice is when I right click on the connection icon and
click on "repair" it says "Purge Dns Cache function failed" - so is this the
key to the problem? I tried to perform the purge through command prompt
ipconig/flushdns too but got the same message.

Before you ask I have spent most of the afternoon on the phone to NTL ( well
listening to their awful recordings while holding) and was meant to be
called back by two separate people later this afternoon but that hasn't
happened.

Has anyone got any ideas as to whether this is something I can rectify
myself and how?!

Thanks very much for bearing with rambling!!

Cheers,
Blurbubble

About the only advice I can offer, you likely have already tried,
rebooting both the modem and the computer.

Other than that, you have made me glad I have Time Warner Cable, they
have been very responsive when I have had problems. They are also located
close so when my modem went out, I just dropped off the old one and got a
new one, back up and running in 30 minutes.

Don't know how your Cable provider is but Comcast requires you to register
the new modem with the system this helps prevent theft. It is very possible
you need to go to a internal web page to activate the modem.

You might even be able to go online with your dialup and get into their help
web page to find out the hidden site!

Now that you mention it, I had to do just that. It was a simple phone
call.

Contact your ISP. They may have to register your new modem in order for it
to function.
