I am working with a Dell Windows XP desktop. Over the
weekend we upgraded to SP-2, which seems to be running
fine with no apparent flaws, but we can't connect to the
Internet. The problem resides in our cable modem
connection, according to Adelphia, our cable company.

We first tried the ethernet connection. In talking to
Adelphia Help, we have learned that our modem connection
is OK. Adelphia says the problem is with the NIC card.
The GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter was installed
and configured by Dell.

The device manager says the NIC is recognized. There seems
to be no issue with the drivers, although with the SP-2
upgrade who knows.

Then we tried the alternative USB connection to the modem.
The wiring is slightly different, but the IE browser still
does not get to the web.

The Adelphia Powerlink software has been installed
properly. I have to believe that somehow the SP-2 has
changed the IP address, so we are not being reconized by
Adelphia.

Windows Security Center appears to be funtioning
properly; turning off the firewall/AV programs appears to
have no effect.

Can someone help us with a rational solution?

Zonny and Bob--

Make sure you're not running more than one software firewall. If you are,
choose between the SP2 Windows Firewall and your third party firewall. If
the 3rd party firewall alone still has problems, check their site for any
compatibility updates for SP2.

Check Device Manager particularly the Network Adapter entry for the NIC
card, and Make sure there are no bangs on any of the entries. Go to Local
Area Connection> Properties>Support>Repair and check out the other tabs on
Lan Properties. Also there are several checkpoints in this thread to look

Open TCP/IP properties for the connection, General Tab, Advanced
Properties, Options Tab, TCP/IP filtering properties, check the Enable
filtering box, and change to Permit All on all three ports/protocols.

SP2 restricts addressing to any other loopback address than 127.0.0.1
If the telephone side of Powerlink uses any other loopback address than
127.0.0.1, it will fail to connect. Ask Adelphia support about this,
although they should be aware since many users would have your
connection problem. See KB884020 for more information and a fix if it
applies.
