Cable Internet works in Safe Mode Only

I'm baffled why I can't get my XP upgrade to work with my
Comast cable Internet connection. It worked fine under
Win98 and it works fine in XP Safe Mode.

I ran IPCONFIG /RELEASE and /RENEW and PING'd
successfully after a normal boot, but Outlook Express and
Internet Explorer can't connnect.
My TCP/IP is set to automatically detect the connection
settings.
I turned the modem and computer off and restarted and
still no go.

The only thing I can think to do is manually configure
the connection with the settings form IPCONFIG which
should work since I have a dynamic IP address.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

I would echo advice given earlier in this forum: open a
command prompt (Start | Run | Cmd) and
type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt", then open that
document in Notepad, copy that information to the
clipboard, and post that information here.

That would really help us determine how things look on
your machine. For example, do you have entries for
Default Gateway and DNS Servers, without which you will
certainly have problems accessing the Internet.

As Jack suggested, post the ipconfig data here for start.

What works in Safe Mode? Any internet services? If so, sounds like a browser
or dns hijack under your login account.

How current is your virus protection? Try these free online virus scans:

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.

First, download LSP-Fix from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, and CWShredder
from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. Both free.

Next, run CWShredder. Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix.

Harden your browser. There are various websites which will check for
vulnerabilities, here are three which I use.

Harden your operating system. Check at least monthly for security updates.

And please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining viruses.
Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer when

post your address unmunged.

All Internet programs work fine in Safe Mode which would
indicate to me that nothing is being hijacked.

Some kind of Spyware during a normal boot is a
possiblilty, although I shut down everything suspect in
MSCONFIG.

It's running a current Norton Anti-virus.

The TCP/IP connection properties are set to obtain IP and
DNS addresses automatically. And IPCONFIG gives me a
full report of those addresses. Although I didn't
remember the /ALL switch so I didn't get the DNS address
to plug in manually. I'm doing this for a client so I
don't have access to the PC at the moment. So that may
very well work when I enter all the addresses manually.

I suspect, that because I just did the XP upgrade from
98, that the XP OS is just not obtaining the address
information. Although it does show a connection on the
task bar and it does know when I pull the ethernet plug
or turn off the modem.

It's sounding more and more like the DNS address is the
missing key. I'll try it next time and read up on the
Spyware stuff.

I had same problem. found zonealarm was on the computer. I unistalled
and internet worked fine.

check for firewalls.
