C3D 9600XT issues ???

R

RWM

Recently upgraded from an nVidia TNT2 M64 AGP card to a Connect3D
Powered by ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128Mb 500Mhz/600Mhz (DDR) card running on
a Compaq Deskpro EX P3/1.4Ghz (SL6BY CPU)/512Mb RAM machine. AGP
aperture is set at 64Mb. Machine has latest Compaq BIOS and original
(latest) Video BIOS.

Using any of the C3D, ATI or Omega drivers, the 9600 XT will not run
MOHAA, A&A or any game for which transform & lighting capability is
required, and supposedly supplied by the 9600XT. Get either blue/black
bars (MOHAA) or game fails to load (A&A - throws "TrueType font" error).

Even older games (Flight Simulator 98, Air Warriors) show no improvement
in frame rate, image stability or extent/degree of artifacts.

To top it off, the audio (SoundMax 3 digital audio) is now all choppy
and stuttering.

Obviously, I must be missing something (major) here. Any ideas?

Thx.

Did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers? If you didn't remove all traces, it
might explain the situation. Use something like Nasty File Remover
(http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3233.html) to clear out registry settings
and files that might be causing the problem. Failing that, you might be
better off just re-installing XP from scratch.

This is a Win98SE machine.

Yes, dropped to Standard VGA -- all nVidia drivers removed -- prior to
the ATI install.

as was said..if you did not use something like driver Cleaner ..or nasty
file remover...you probably have left over entries that may be causing
conflicts...also make sure you have enough of a psu to handle the higher
demand of the card. Check to make sure that the video card and sound card
are not to close in IRQ's to cause issues...on the old 98 systems..it was
best to have the sound card around IRQ5 and video at 10 or 11

I have a very current system...always have...when I switched from Nvidia to
my ATI 9600XT it worked okay..but not great. Switching video cards is a
major upgrade..the only way I could actually get it to work like it should
was by reformatting. I myself have reformatted several times in the last few
weeks just playing with drivers to get my X800Xl to work correctly with my
older games. Now I have switched to a dual boot XP..just so I can play games
that are older on 1..and newer games plus all of my DVD and video rendering
stuff on another. By the way...MOHAA is why I have done this..switched to BT
to run my online games from Spearhead in Win 98 compatibilty mode. You may
have to do a ground up format to get it all working right.

I'm not looking (hopefully) to go into continual maintenance mode to get
a few of the kids' games to run...

Some joy to report, after numerous boot/reboot/re-re-boot cycling.

Got MOHAA to go, and kids report it looks and works great, BTW.

But -- still get "TruType font" error on attempts to load A&A.

With compatibility issues resolved, come to find via ATI utilities that
this card identifies as RV350-based, not the RV360 of a "real" 9600XT.
