Hi Mat, (Sorry, if I sound redundant, but I had to get this straight in my
head the first time)
George is 100% correct
You can create a file in the "etc" directory with notepad and place the
following lines in it as a minimum. The location is just as easy to do a
search for "etc" (no quotes). when you save it in there, notepad
automatically will add the extension of a text file, which is ".txt". After
you save it, right click on the file name, and rename it without the "dot"
or the extension "txt" on it.
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain
If you want to put it to some good use to help you wart off malware sites,
data miners, etc. look at this site. They have gone to a lot of trouble to
help remove bad folks from being able to delve into your privacy. Check it
out.

The way you get the information onto your computer is to "copy" what is on
that webpage, go to the "hosts" file, right click on it and choose 'notepad"
to open it, paste the information that is on your "clipboard"(anything you
copy goes to what is known as your clipboard to hold until you paste it
somewhere or cut/copy something else). When you save this with the file name
"hosts" it will have the .txt extension. Just rename it, and leave the .txt
off. It will squawk about the file being unusable. Don't worry about that;
that is the way the "hosts" file is supposed to be.
The link above is updated continuously, so periodically doing the same thing
will add new "data miners" to the list, where it will not let them place a
file onto your computer, where they can use your computer for financial
gain.
The reason for having "127.0.0.1 localhost" above, that is your computer
DNS. When you use the information off the website above it tells your
computer to tell the websites you look at your computer doesn't exist, so it
shows blanks where they normally place advertisements on your webpages. And
it keeps your right to privacy in your hands (well almost). There is so much
new stuff being done, it is a constant hassle to keep you business only
yours.
Hope this helps, and others read it and can help them also.
good luck,
don
