c:\winnt\ntds files missing

Normally when you run dcpromo these files edb.*,
ntds.dit, res.* will be created in the C:\winnt\ntds
directory, I created a new DC of an existing domain. When
i browse to that directory i dont see ntds.dit file. any
suggestions why.

run your DC in Directory Service Restore Mode, run ntdsutil and go into
files menu. Run info command which will give you path of your AD database.
If you are searching this in Explorer make sure, that you enable hidden
files and folders in your view.

Are you sure that the dcpromo process completed? A server can't be a DC
without these files. Perhaps you specified an alternate location for the
database files. You can look through the c:\winnt\debug\dcpromo.log file to
determine where you put the files. Open the file and use FIND to locate
DsDatabasePath. That should give you the location.

Also in Windows 2003 the path would actually be C:\Windows\NTDS.

I believe you can find the path information from the registry under
HKLM/System/CCS/Services/NTDS/Parameters
