I recently installed the SyncToy powertoy. It installed into Program
Files\Microsoft\SyncToy. A day later I tried to set up a Microsoft
Virtual PC and there was a glitch.
On rebooting my machine, I found two oddities. When I reboot the
machine, an Explorer window opens for C:\Program Files\Microsoft. Also
the forward and back button on my Intellimouse stop working. I can
restart the mouse buttons from Control Panel, but they stop on the next
reboot.
Uninstall SyncToy, the problem remains. Delete the Microsoft folder, it
goes away. Recreate the Microsoft folder manually (no installation) it
comes back!
I have tried System restore to the point where it says no changes have
been made to the compute. I have tried reinstalling from a Norton Ghost
backup made before the glitch. Still there. I have been unable to find
any registry setting which might cause the Explorer window to open.
My computer is only on a home peer to peer LAN, so there are no
externally applied policies, and every reference I can find in the
registry to save settings is correct.
I have been unable to reproduce this behaviour on any other computer. I
do not think it has anything to do with the SyncToy installation,
because the problem didn't occur immediately. That leaves the failed
Virtual PC creation.
Can anyone shed any light on this and suggest a cure, please?
