C(pound) when downloading files or trying to play Windows Media

Anytime I download a file, my computer adds a "C"
followed by the British symbol for poundsterling at the
beginning of the filename. This would be a mere annoyance
except it prevents playing Windows Media files when
clicking the link, as it also adds a "C(pound)"at the
beginning of the file and then says it cannot find the
path. (Interestingly, I can play WM files if I copy the
shortcut to "Play URL" instead of just clicking the link).

The tech at the store I bought the system from says it is
a virus or spyware, but I have a religiously updated
version of Norton AV. I did delete AdAware and install
SpyBot at their suggestion, but still have the problem!

Any ideas?

A million thanks in advance for your suggestions/help.
